The egg mobile is a mobile chicken coop that allows us to move our chickens regularly so they’re always on fresh pasture. It’s based on the design by Richard Perkins of Ridgedale Farm in Sweden.
Our version was built on an old caravan chassis. The chassis was 3.6m long so it’s about two-thirds of the size of the Ridgedale one.
The floor is 40mm weld mesh that keeps potential predators out but allows the poo to drop through on to the field below. This reduces the effort to clean it out, and ensures the land gets plenty of fertiliser.
It’s covered in salvaged metal roofing panels. Although heavy, they provide a lot of rigidity – a bit like you’d get with a monocoque construction. The finished egg mobile can easily be moved with two people pushing and pulling – though for longer moves we tow it with a UTV.
The plans for the Ridgedale egg mobile are available at ridgedalefarmbuilds.com.
