Farmer for a day

We’re often asked questions about our life on the smallholding.  If you are curious about what a day in the life of a smallholder is like, or perhaps you want to venture down this path yourself, then this fully immersive, leave-your-phone-at-the-door experience might be just what you are looking for.

You’ll roll up your sleeves and get hands-on with a variety of activities. You’ll learn about the animals, the unique opportunity to interact closely with them is important when it comes to understanding your food source and how we are all connected.

Activities vary according to the time of year but might involve:

  • collecting eggs
  • moving the chickens
  • moving sheep
  • reconfiguring electric fences
  • animal health checks
  • feeding orphaned lambs
  • woodland tasks – such as coppicing, dead hedge construction
  • chopping wood

Some activities may be weather dependent. We encourage you to bring suitable clothing because there is no such thing as bad weather!

You’ll get some downtime to take a walk and reflect on the beautiful scenery surrounding you as well as a delicious homemade meal. We want you to leave here with a good tired!

What to expect

You should expect mud, cold, wind, rain and lots of poo.  You will get muddy.  The sheep don’t usually bite but they’ll more than likely step on your toe.

What to bring

You’ll need to bring:

  • wellies or strong waterproof boots (or both!)
  • thick socks (multiple pairs)
  • waterproof jacket / coat
  • waterproof trousers
  • a hat
  • lots of warm layers
  • complete change of clothing
  • good humour.

We do have spare wellies and some protective gear – let us know in advance if you need to borrow some.

Did we mention mud?

The small print

We’ll provide a safety briefing on the day and you’ll be asked to read and sign a disclaimer before starting work.

For practical reasons we’re limiting this to four places on the day.

For health and safety reasons we can’t allow use of machinery (chainsaws etc) but we’ll make up for it with plenty of hard manual labour instead.

We’ll be providing food / refreshments on the day.  Please let us know in advance if you have any allergies or other dietary requirements.

How to book

Note that places are very limited.  Please contact us to discuss dates and reserve a spot.
